A Civilized Siesta
Here you are in Los Cabos (or any part of Mexico) and you find stores closed in the early and mid
afternoon. This is not a lack of work
ethic as we might first perceive but is, instead, the siesta hour.
In the U.S. we tend to look
upon folks who nap in the afternoon as lazy.
The U.S. is one of the few countries in the world who do not observe the
siesta hour. The siesta is not just a
custom but it is a scientific fact that our bodies require this very civilized
nap.
It used to be thought that
afternoon sleepiness was the result of a big lunch. But scientists have found out that it is a
dip in body temperature, which causes sleepiness.
Just as a similar decrease
encourages you to shut down at bedtime, this midday dip can make you crave a
siesta. An ideal nap should last 15 to
20 minutes. More than 30 and you may end
up with sleep inertia and feel even more
groggy when you wake up.
Early afternoon is when your
circadian rhythms (the pattern of physical and mental changes we each repeat
every 24 hours) are more likely to want your body to sleep.
Scientists have also
discovered that in the work place, production is higher amongst those who
indulged in the afternoon siesta versus those who try to work through this
circadian dip.
And some scientists believe
that folks who nap live longer.
So shut your eyes and doze
awhile. You will enjoy the rest of your
day much more. And to learn more about about Cabo visit Los Cabos Agent.
