Is it safe to live in Cabo?
I just wanted to let you know my opinion of the safety here in Cabo San Lucas. I have lived here over 3 years full time and my wife over 11 years. We have both found living here in Cabo to be very safe. This is especially well supported from my wife who spent her whole life prior to living here living in Mexico City. She is very cautious and aware of crime and kidnappings as it is a common occurrence in Mexico City. I am not sure if you saw the movie “Man on Fire” with Denzell Washington but my wife said that movie is not too far off with how life is in Mexico City. Cabo is fortunate to be isolated from the rest of Mexico with 1000 miles between it and the border city of Tijuana where there is a lot of crime. And also having the Sea of Cortez between us and mainland Mexico I think is the reason why we enjoy such a safe environment. As in anyplace there is still crime and here is no exception. There is the car or home break – in that is the most common crime committed here in Cabo. I hope this helps educate you about the safety of Cabo and please let me know if you have any further questions.

Hello Nick,

I just finished reading your post about the safety issues in Cabo San Lucas. It made me feel better, because I'm thinking about moving to  Cabo. I work in the hospitality industry and San Lucas has some amazing hotels. The only thing that makes me feel very hesitant about everything is the safety in Los Cabos. I'm a 23 year-old Canadian and I will be traveling alone and my Spanish is sketchy. I've worked abroad before but do you have any recommendations  for an expat going to Cabo San Lucas?

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I would really like to read your reply.

Hey Danielle,

i think the most important thing is to speak to people who are doing exactly what you are trying to do down here.  getting a perspective on the realities of the job and also of work/life balance here in cabo.  i can say for myself living and working here is incredible.  life is easier and simplier here in paradise but depending on your job that can change things drastically.  i have always said that you can be in the worse city in the world but if you are surrounded by good people you can have the best time in the world. i also feel the opposite can be true.  even though, cabo is a fantastic place to live the people you will be working with will influence drastically your experience here.

oh yeah, also if you move here don't expect things to move too quickly everything moves slower down here from getting your telephone setup to going to the bank and depositing a check.

Interesting turn of events of late.  I've been coming to Cabo twice a year for about 12 years now and have never had a problem.  Never felt unsafe.  Walked all through the town, both tourist and local areas and always felt ok.  The local news outlets in Scottsdale just ran a story about a man from Arizona who was beaten by 6 men in police uniforms a few months ago.  That dovetailed to another incident of a man from Portland who was killed, presumeably by the same 6.  Now I read about the Vancouver man who was killed.  Are things changing?  I'll be back in two weeks with 18 friends and family, several who have never been there before.

I am thinking of investing in beach front property in Cabo San Lucas.  Any thoughts on the area, including crime, construction, appreciation, value, population.  Any thoughts are appreciated.
